DermEase

Professional skincare resources are now available to everyone.

Reimagine your dermatology experience with AI.

The skin, the body's largest organ, greatly impacts appearance and well-being. Skincare is vital for quality of life and mental health, yet many lack access to professionals.

According to statista.com, as of 2022, the revenue from skincare products in the US market was nearly 20 billion dollars.

Despite the huge market, my survey shows that 100% of participants want professional help with skincare, but only 30% have access to professionals, and all of them stated it was not easy to get in touch in the first place.

Therefore, Users need a easier way to get professionals help for skin care

Target:

Young adults that care about skincare and limited time or limited resources for them to get professional help

Solution: Providing better skincare using AI technology

Users will receive an initial skin assessment and can take a photo using the camera. AI image analysis will be used to detect any notable skin issues. We will collaborate with certified skin care professionals to provide consultation, so users can receive professional recommendations for skin care products.

Initial Task Flow Design

Test and Changes

Initial prototype was created and tested on 5 potential users.

First prototype

All users asked to use the prototype however they wish. I monitored the features they were interested in. And an interview was conducted afterwards that covers their thoughts on the process, why they selected the option they selected, and if they have any suggestions.

Result:

2 out of 5 users bypassed the AI analyzing feature and focused more on browsing products, 1 out of 5 users said they felt like this seemed like a regular shopping site with added feature
This might be because users are more familiar to apps they used before and they already formed a habit, and my design triggered that.

New Task Flow

Second Prototype

Tested on 5 potential users, and 4 out of 5 users didn't have an issue with the length of the building profile. Additionally, 4 out of 5 users chose to build a profile and talk to a professional. Therefore, presenting the app less like a shopping site and emphasizing our unique features increased user satisfaction.

Consultation Feature Testing

Third Prototype

“I think it would be better if I can get more information about the online consultation before I start chatting... I didn’t know how to pick my doctor”

“I didn’t like that the chat started immediately after I clicked the doctor’s name... it felt awkward when the conversation started before I was ready”

“It was a little confusing to me when I saw the list of doctor... I had to take a second to process what I should do next...”

Final Prototype

Final Prototype

It’s been a great journey to learn about skin care and help people to elevate their skin care! However, I didn’t have enough resources to address all the issues. I chose to focus on the AI feature and the processional consultation feature.

During the first interview, one of the participant mentioned that he had skin cancer and is using medication skin care products prescribed by dermatologist for post surgery care. I realized we need to notify users if they have concerning skin conditions. So a notification with red box will appear in the kind tip area, if anything serious skin issue is detected.

I received suggestions for body skin care, facial hair care, and community feature/social media feature. I chose to focus on facial skin care because that is what majority of people think of when they talk about skin care. However, they can be our future project. All of these are perfect for update features!
